One killed in Awka road mishap, 10 injured
A middle-aged woman was Monday killed, while no fewer than ten others were injured in a ghastly motor accident along the Enugu Onitsha expressway, Awka in Anambra State.
The incident which occurred around 2.30pm involved three cars: a Honda CRV jeep with registration number HTE 140 AA and some motorcycles.
An eyewitness, Uzoma Oji said the driver of the Honda car was coming from the Enugu axis when he suddenly lost control and rammed into some motorcyclists at the popular Regina Ceali junction.
He said the driver who was carrying his wife and three of his children, hit two vehicles and motorcyclists by the roadside before knocking down a woman who was waiting for the vehicle.
“The lady was standing by the roadside and waiting for a bus when the car knocked her down, killing her instantly,” he said.
The witness, who blamed the incident on over speeding, cautioned commercial motorcyclists against parking along the highways to pick passengers.
Confirming the incident, the state Sector Commander, Mr. Sunday Ajayi, said one person lost her life in the road mishap, while ten persons sustained varying degrees of injuries.
He said the injured ones were taken to the Regina Ceili hospital for medical attention, while the body of the deceased had been deposited at the mortuary.
Ajayi blamed the accident on over speeding, just as he called on motorists to consider other road users especially while approaching a build up traffic areas.
