Ondo Govt Slams APC Chairman for False Claim on Akeredolu’s Health
The health condition of Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, has become a matter of public concern as he continues to receive medical treatment abroad.
The governor, who is reportedly suffering from leukemia, a type of blood cancer, has been away from the state since June 17, 2023.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, has broken his silence on the governor’s health situation after a meeting with APC state chairmen in Abuja on Monday.
Adamu confirmed that Akeredolu was in a critical state and hospitalized overseas.
He said: “We regret to announce the extreme incapacity of the Governor of Ondo State who we understand has been hospitalised overseas. We wish and pray for him for a speedy recovery.”
Adamu also commented on the ministerial list of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who assumed office on May 29, 2023. He said that the president was still consulting with various stakeholders before nominating his ministers. He added that the list would be submitted to the Senate for screening and confirmation soon.
He said: “The president has just started. And he is doing his extensive consultation before coming up with his nominees for ministers. The nomination of the ministers will come first. They will go through their screening until they are pronounced after they have been submitted by Mr. President.
“And Mr President will formally appoint his Ministers and swear them in. Only after doing that will he disclose each of them to the country to know which Minister is going to which ministry, and how many ministries we are going to have.”
According to some reports, President Tinubu’s cabinet will consist of 42 federal ministers and 20 special advisers (SAs), drawn from both the APC and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Some of the former governors that are speculated to be on the list include Nasir El-Rufai (Kaduna), Abdullahi Ganduje (Kano), Abubakar Atiku Bagudu (Kebbi), Mohammed Badaru Abubakar (Jigawa), Nyesom Wike (Rivers), and Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti).
Meanwhile, the Ondo State government has rejected Adamu’s statement on Akeredolu’s health condition, describing it as false and disrespectful.
The Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Bamidele Ademola-Olateju, issued a statement on Tuesday, July 11, 2023, saying that the governor was in high spirits and would soon return to the country.
He also thanked President Tinubu, APC governors, party leaders and the people of the state for their prayers and support for the governor and his family.
Akeredolu’s incapacitation comes at a critical time for Ondo state. The state is scheduled to hold a governorship election in October 2023. It is unclear who will be the APC’s candidate in the election.
The governor’s health condition has also raised concerns about the future of the APC in Ondo state. The party is currently facing a number of challenges, including internal divisions and a weak opposition.
Akeredolu’s absence from the state has also created a leadership vacuum. The deputy governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has been acting as governor, but he is not a popular figure.
The APC is hoping that Akeredolu will be able to return to Nigeria soon and resume his duties as governor. However, it is unclear when that will happen. In the meantime, the party will need to find a way to fill the leadership vacuum and ensure that Ondo state remains on track.
