Occupants Escape Death as Three-Storey Building Collapses in Surulere
A three-storey building collapsed at Ikpoh Street, Surulere, Lagos State on Friday night, but no one was hurt in the incident.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed that there was no casualty in the building collapse, which occurred at about 10pm at No. 14 Ikpoh Street, Surulere.
According to an eyewitness, Gervase Anyanwu, a businessman who lived in the building, he and the other occupants heard a loud noise from one of the wings of the building and quickly gathered at the muster point before escaping to safety.
Anyanwu said that it was by the grace of God that they were able to evacuate the building before it came down completely.
Another resident of the street, who preferred anonymity, said that the building had shown signs of distress before the collapse and that some of the occupants had complained to the landlord about it.
As of Saturday morning, the site of the collapse was cordoned off by security personnel and emergency workers, but the removal of the debris had not started.
NEMA territorial coordinator, Ibrahim Farinloye, said that the agency was working with other relevant government agencies to ensure that the site was cleared and that the cause of the collapse was investigated.
