NYSC@45: Prisoners get free medical care in Oyo

In a bid to commemorate the 45 years anniversary of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), the Oyo State chapter of the NYSC has taken a free medical outreach to the prisoners in the Oyo State prison yard, Agodi, Ibadan.

The NYSC state coordinator, Mrs Ifeoma Anidobi, while addressing the inmates said, it is imperative to note that one of the major cardinal points of the NYSC is to preach national unity, hence, the reason NYSC has deemed it fit to bring the medical outreach to the prisoners, knowing that people from different regions of the country are in prisons.

“NYSC was inaugurated during the General Yakubu Gowon administration in the year 1973, three years after the civil war with the major aim of upholding the national unity and integration,” she said.

She further advised the prisoners to be of good conduct and to try as much as possible to learn meaningful skills that would be useful for them after leaving the prison.

Also, she promised that the Oyo State NYSC will ensure that the corps members who are law graduates currently serving in the state provide free legal aid to the prisoners in need of such.

The inmates were, however, advised about maintaining personal and environmental hygiene, as a precautionary measure to avoid any chronic health challenge that might hinder their well being while in the prison.

The Deputy Comptroller General of the prison, Mr Olufemi Ogunyadi, while commending the NYSC for the free medical care, disclosed that the Oyo State prison, Agodi, is currently housing over 1,000 inmates.
