No Teachers, No Peace: Ekiti Students Protest Over Transfer of 42 Teachers and Bedbug Infestation

Students of Federal Science and Technical College, Usi-Ekiti, a technical secondary school established by the federal government in 2002, took to the streets on Monday to voice their dissatisfaction over the transfer of 42 of their teachers and the poor condition of their hostel.

The students claimed that they had been left without adequate teaching staff and exposed to health hazards due to the presence of bedbugs in their dormitories.

According to an eyewitness, the students blocked the main road leading to the school and carried placards with various inscriptions such as

“We want our teachers back”,

“No to bedbugs”, and

“Save our future”.

The students said that they have not been having regular classes since October 31, 2023, when the government transferred 42 teachers from the school to other locations and replaced them with 34 new teachers who have not reported to their new duty post.

The students alleged that the new teachers refused to resume because Usi Ekiti is a remote area with poor infrastructure and amenities.

A parent of one of the students, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, expressed concern over the unhygienic situation of the hostel, which she said was infested with bedbugs.

She said that she saw a bedbug on her son during the open day and that he was unaware of the parasite.

She appealed to the school authority to take urgent steps to fumigate the hostel and prevent a possible outbreak of diseases.

“The time I came to school for open day yesterday, l saw one bedbug on my son, being a new student in the hostel, he could not identify it. They were moving together joyfully. The school authority should please do something about it.”

She also demanded that the government should repost teachers to the school so that academic activities can resume.

However, a source from the school who did not want to be named said that the transfer of teachers was a routine exercise by the government and that the new teachers were expected to resume soon.

The source also said that the school was aware of the bedbug problem and that it was working on finding a lasting solution. The source appealed to the students to remain calm and cooperate with the school management.
