Nigerians To Experience Total Blackout As Electricity Workers Begin A Nationwide Strike

The National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), on Wednesday, December 11, has embarked on a Nationwide strike effective today after several warnings that did not attract the attention of the Federal Government.

After the expiration of the ultimatum given, it is envisaged that a total blackout nationwide will follow.

The union said the decision to down tools remained the only option since there was no dialogue with the Federal Government to resolve the lingering industrial crisis in the sector.

According to the Union, “The ministry of power has failed to resolve some issues affecting members of the union since 2013 when the power sector was privatised especially issues that with the over 2,000 disengaged former PHCN workers and their pay off.”

”Some of the unresolved issues are illegal transfer of union properties to power investors and the alleged refusal by some distribution companies (DisCos) to remit deducted contributory pension of their members of staff to pension managers.”

Because of this, some of the DISCOs have started issuing warning of disruption of service to their customers.

Read this from Ikeja Electric:

‘’It is important to state that the grievances of the Union are not specific to Ikeja Electric, but directed at the Federal Government and the entire Power Sector.’’

However, due to the strike, there may be a disruption of services across the Network.

Ikeja Electric is working with the Federal Government and other relevant stakeholders to ensure that the Industrial Action is called off and there will be a resumption of services to our esteemed customers.

Nigerians who have not enjoyed premium service from PHCN and DISCOs will soon be thrown into darkness by this strike causing untold hardship.
