Nigerian Police protest in Osun over 18-month unpaid salaries
Nigeria Police Force on Wednesday staged a protest in Osogbo, the Osun State capital over the non-payment of their stipends in the last 18 months.
The protesting, Police Special Constabulary in uniforms marched through Okefia down to Olaiya junction in the state capital, chanting that their remuneration should be paid.
The constabularies recruited to complement the police structure by providing intelligence, among others were inaugurated in May 2021 at Police Headquarters, Osun State after their training in April 2021.
The protestors displayed placards with several inscriptions such as: ‘Pay our salary now’; ‘Okada riders are sleeping with our wives’, ‘Pay us our 18-month salary’, ‘Pay us our stipends and allowances’ and ‘18 months without kobo’ among others.
In a trending video, one protester was heard saying, “We are dying. We spent so much at the college. I have children but it’s 18 months now since I have not been paid. Four of us have been killed by armed robbers during attacks on banks in Ikire, Iragbiji, and others. We want our money.”
This comes a few days after their colleagues in Kwara state staged similar protests at strategic areas of Ilorin, asking for their 18 months’ salaries to be paid.
Some of the protesters rode on motorcycles carrying three passengers each while others in police uniforms covered their bodies with leaves as they marched along the streets.
The Constables also complained that they have not been paid any salary by the state government since the completion of their training in April 2021.
The protest, which went viral online, caused serious gridlock along the Popular Ahmadu Bello Way in Ilorin.
