Energy Costs and Inflation in 2024

The report highlights the continued rise in cooking gas prices throughout 2024, which reflects broader inflationary trends in Nigeria. Other energy sources, such as electricity and fuel, also experienced notable price increases during the year.

As a result, Nigeria’s inflation rate soared to 34.80% in December 2024, according to NBS data. This sharp rise underscores the growing cost of living in the country, despite efforts by the **Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN)** and other fiscal authorities to curb inflationary pressures.

Implications for Nigerians

The rising cost of LPG and other essential commodities has placed additional financial burdens on households and businesses. Cooking gas, being a primary energy source for many Nigerians, has become increasingly unaffordable for low-income families, forcing some to seek alternative—and often less safe—means of cooking.

Economic analysts warn that this trend could exacerbate poverty levels, reduce purchasing power, and widen inequalities across the country. The report also signals the urgent need for policies that can stabilize energy prices, promote affordability, and address Nigeria’s broader economic challenges.

As Nigeria grapples with these pressing issues, stakeholders have called for a comprehensive approach to tackling inflation, improving energy infrastructure, and ensuring that essential commodities remain accessible to all citizens.
