National Assembly Workers Threaten Strike Over Conditions Of Service

The Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN) in the National Assembly has threatened to embark on an indefinite strike due to “poor conditions of service and management’s lackadaisical attitude to its demands”.

Rising from ‎an emergency congress, the association gave the National Assembly management two weeks to address the issues raised or it would embark on the indefinite strike on December 14.

The association also resolved to picket the premises of the federal legislature from tomorrow to Thursday on issues bordering on Consolidated Legislative Salary Structure (CONLESS).

They also said both Senate President Bukola Saraki and Speaker Yakubu Dogara, in line with their statutory mandate, should take urgent steps to nominate members of the National Assembly Service Commission (NASC).

They said all pending staff promotions and conversion letters should be released with arrears due fully paid, while the 2018 promotion eligibility list be released and promotion exams conducted on or before December 31 this year.

But the director of information in the National Assembly, Mr Jerry Agada, told Daily Trust on telephone that the management has been on the issue of CONLESS, adding that it is the release of the 2018 budget that was affecting the payment.

He said the management has also made commitments in the area of arrears payment for promotions and conducting new ones, noting that the Clerk to the National Assembly (CNA), Mohammed Sani-Omolori, had variously engaged the association on the issues.

The director noted that as long as they were not averse to the issues raised by the union, it was important that members of the association understood the various actions the management was taking to address the issues raised amicably.
