Mother of ‘Mummy Calm Down’ Boy Dies by Suicide in Edo
A tragic news has shocked the nation as Toluige Olokoobi, the mother of Oreofeoluwa Lawal-Babalola, the little boy who became famous for his viral “mummy calm down” video, has died by suicide in Edo state.
Toluige, who was a resident of Benin, the state capital, was found hanging with a rope around her neck in her home on Monday.
Her husband, who reported the incident to the police, said he discovered her body when he returned from the market. He said he did not know the reason for her suicide and that she did not share her problems with anyone.
Toluige’s death came as a shock to many Nigerians who remembered her son’s adorable video that went viral in 2020.
In the video, Oreofeoluwa was seen pleading with his mother to calm down and give him a last chance as she was about to discipline him for his misbehaviour.
The video melted the hearts of many people, including the Lagos state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who invited the boy and his family to meet him and used his message as a theme for his Eid-el-Kabir speech to the citizens.
Oreofeoluwa, who was then four years old, also revealed in several interviews that he wanted to be a police officer to fight corruption in Nigeria. He also featured in some adverts and campaigns for different brands and organisations.
The police spokesperson in Edo state, Chidi Nwabuzor, confirmed Toluige’s death and said her husband has been arrested and detained for questioning.
He said the police are investigating the circumstances surrounding her suicide and appealed to the public to provide any useful information that could help the case. He also advised people to seek help from professionals or trusted persons when they are depressed or suicidal.
