Man climbs 200ft telecoms mast in Lagos to attempt suicide

A man identified as Daniel Bassi has caused a commotion on Wednesday in the Iyana Ipaja area of Lagos State after climbing a 200 feet telecommunication mast in an attempt to commit suicide.

Newsflash Nigeria learnt that the aluminium technician had climbed the telecom tower around 8:30 am on Wednesday and refused to come down until around 10:30 am when a mammoth crowd had gathered at the spot.

While residents were still pleading with Bassi, men of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) reportedly arrived at the scene and joined restoring the man’s sanity from the thought of killing himself.

The artisan is said to have called residents of the area for fellowship after he climbed the mast.

Confirming the incident, NEMA Acting Zonal Coordinator, Ibrahim Farinloye, said the artisan had said that he was pushed to climb the mast.

Farinloye’s statement reads: “A man who climbed a mast possibly to commit suicide was convinced to come down from the 200 feet mast unhurt. In an interactive discussion with NEMA, LASEMA and the police, Mr Bassi was incoherent and could not make a complete statement.

He revealed that he never knew the area before but something pushed him to go to the scene. He was said to have called people around the scene and informed them that he wanted to do a fellowship and started with songs and praise.”

Newsflash Nigeria understands that Bassi has been handed over to the police at the Gowon Estate Police Station after he was rescued.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Adekunle Ajisebutu, has also promised to give a feedback report on what pushed the artisan to have attempted to kill himself.
