Kwara State Polytechnic Reduces Tuition Fees

The Kwara State Government has announced new fees to be paid by the students of the Kwara State Polytechnic.

The state Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed, in a statement signed by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Communication, Dr. Muyideen Akorede, directed the management of the polytechnic to reduce the tuition fees payable for the 2017/2018 academic session.

Akorede said Ahmed’s approval was in line with the recommendations of the committee he set up to conduct an investigation into the tuition fees of the polytechnic.

He added that the committee, which comprised members of the House of Assembly and officials of relevant ministries, submitted its report on Wednesday.

The statement read in part, “With the approval, ND 1 indigenous students of the polytechnic will now pay N50,000 as against the N62,700 initially charged by the school management.

“Similarly, Governor Ahmed also approved a reduction in the tuition fees to be paid by part-time students of the institution, both indigenes and non-indigenes.”

Also, the Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Dr. Ali Ahmad, announced the change in fees during a media briefing in Ilorin on Thursday.

He said the Joint Executive-Legislative Committee on tuition fees of the Polytechnic, which comprised senior officials of the executive and legislative arms of the government, reviewed facts and figures before coming up with the new fees.

He stated that for the 2017/2018 academic session, the polytechnic would revert to the schedule of fees approved by the joint committee, which, according to him, were lower than what indigenes paid for the 2016/2017 session.

He said, “In other words, the payable fees by indigenes are now not only lower than what the management was to charge; they are even lower than what students paid in the last academic session. Thus, some students will now pay as much as N19,000 less than what they would have paid.

“All students that have paid over and above the 2017/2018 fees as just approved shall be refunded by the school. This decision supersedes all earlier decisions on this subject matter.”
