Gift Agenoisa, a JSS1 student flogged and suspended for coming to school with an “indecent hairstyle” has sued the Ekiti state government and is seeking N15 million in damages for breach of her “fundamental rights”.

In a suit number HAD/01/CR/2021 and sworn to, at the Ado-Ekiti  High Court, on her behalf by her mother Odunayo Agenoisa, the student of Immaculate Secondary School, Ado-Ekiti, claimed her suspension infringed on her rights.

Joined in the suit are the school principal, Oluwasanmi F.M, the education commissioner Olabimpe Aderiye, Ekiti State Teaching Service Commission and Ekiti state government.

Agenoisa claimed she was singled out on assembly on May 22 and given 20 lashes on the order of the principal for wearing an indecent hairstyle.

In summons by her counsel, Timmy Omotoso, she demanded N15 million in damages for her suspension and an immediate reinstatement to school with unfettered access to all services.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that on  May 22, Agenoisa’s father, a  Police Sergeant,  Elijah, allegedly mobilized four armed policemen to the school to manhandle some teachers for scolding his daughter who was said to have come to school with an indecent hairdo against the school rules and regulation.

  1. Imagine indecent hairstyle. Let us wait maybe the lower court will grant her request. School is a moral and a discipline place not your father’s house. If her father don’t want her to be discipline in school he should have build a school in his house for learning.

  2. It is obvious that the parents of this little girl are leading her to be a social misfit with no respect for societal norms.and values. What is more appalling is that the father is a law enforcement agent.
An incident like this portends dim future for some youths.

  3. Must they beat her to death because indicent hairdo? To the extent she fainted and was rushed to a clinic? What a cruel kind of discipline. 20 lashes on an jss1? If I am the father, I will ensure the teacher is beaten too, but he took the legal way.

  4. I appreciate your kind gesture,mr Adesina Olumuyiwa over your contribution on the said issue. My own take is this, the idiotic father should possibly build a school for his futureless children to be oppressing and showcasing their fashion expertise instead of influencing the nation’s leaders of tomorrow with there mannerless act and not capitalising on the development to making money to himself.Foolish man with no sences of humour.Infact,he is a dead man while still living.

  5. Let’s be guided in the way and manner we make comments on this issue. While I agree that an erring child should be disciplined, twenty strokes of cane on a jss1 student to the extent of bleeding and fainting is child abuse. If we don’t correct some ills in our society we will remain backward forever. Lets wait and see what the court will say. You see, most of this school teachers vent their anger and fraustrations on the students. If a teacher is underrenumerated or not renumerated at all, he or she becomes a danger in the school environment.

  6. Yes, I believe that the student rights must not be violated. Also I know that the school has its rules and regulations which includes the uniform or mode of dressing. While I don’t support ‘over flogging’ I feel that that d parents shd have reported the matter to the PP TESCOM, the school regulatory body. With this action now, I will advice d parents to transfer the student to a private school. Our institutions like to play to the galary. If you think you know your right in this country the govt will show you that rights have limits. That judge in the court had been claimed several times.May be day is one of the reasons y he is successful. You will need a good lawyer and an hungary NGO.MY TAKE WITHDRAW THE CASE!
