INEC Fixes Date for Post-Election Review of 2023 Polls
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that it will conduct a post-election review of the just-concluded 2023 general election.
The review will start with a meeting of the Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) on July 4 and end with a retreat of the Commission on August 5.
The review will cover all aspects of the electoral process before, during and after the polls, with a view to learning lessons and improving future elections.
The Commission said it will engage with its staff and stakeholders, such as political parties, security agencies, observers, media and service providers, to solicit their feedback and recommendations.
The Commission also said it will release a detailed schedule of activities and timelines after the meeting with RECs on July 4.
The 2023 general election was held on February 25 and saw President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) emerge victorious over his main challengers, Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP).
However, Atiku and Obi have rejected the outcome of the election and filed petitions at the Presidential Election Tribunal, alleging irregularities and manipulation of results.
INEC has defended the credibility and integrity of the election, saying it was free, fair and transparent. The Commission has also expressed its readiness to defend its conduct at the tribunal.
