INEC declares APC winner of Ondo bye-election, amid vote-buying allegations

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has declared Mayokun Lawson Alade of the All Progressives Congress, APC, as the winner of the Akure North/South federal constituency bye-election.

Alade polled 26,379 votes, edging out Mr Olumuyiwa Adu of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, who received 24,201 votes.

Oluwawemimo Fadeke of the African Democratic Party (ADP) received 465 votes, while Joseph Ajayi of the All Peoples Party (APP) polled 125 votes, Olaniyi Olufemi of the National Redemption Movement (NRM) got 76 votes, Opawole Tajudeen of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) received 68 votes, and Olawale of the Accord Party (AA), 41 votes.

Professor Deji Ogunseni of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, FUTA, served as the returning officer for the election and announced the results.

The bye-election, held in two local governments of Akure North and Akure South, was peaceful but was said to have been heavily rocked with vote-buying.

The election was trailed by the alleged involvement of the Deputy Governor of the State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa in sharing money, in some units within the constituency.

The bye-election became necessary following the death of the lawmaker representing the constituency, Adedayo Omolafe in August 2021.
