Igbo Traders React as LASBCA Demolishes 17 Buildings in Alaba Market

The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) has identified and marked at least 17 buildings in Alaba International Market, Ojo Local Government Area, as being in an advanced condition of distress and in need of immediate removal.

The General Manager of LASBCA, Gbolahan Oki, disclosed this after agency representatives marked the buildings for demolition on Friday.

He said that the state government responded quickly and stated that the identified buildings would be removed soon in order to prevent them from collapsing on inhabitants and reduce the number of distressed structures across the city.

He said that the state government had earlier concluded plans to demolish the buildings before Monday, June 19, but the demolition was delayed due to some logistic issues. He assured that the demolition would commence as soon as possible.

Some of the shopping plazas marked for demolition by LASBCA include; G80 Alaba Rago Road, Good Season Shopping Complex, the building on 840 Ojo Igbede and the structure behind Oba Oseni Plaza, among others.

Oki said that the buildings were identified and marked for demolition after a thorough inspection by LASBCA officials.

He said that the buildings were found to be structurally defective, poorly maintained and over-stressed due to overloading and illegal conversion.

He said that the buildings posed a serious threat to lives and property of the occupants and other residents in the area. He said that LASBCA had served notices to the owners and occupants of the buildings to vacate them within seven days before the demolition.

He said that LASBCA was committed to ensuring that all buildings in Lagos State comply with the building control regulations and standards. He said that LASBCA would continue to monitor and inspect all buildings in the state and enforce compliance with the Lagos State Urban and Regional Planning and Development Law of 2010 and the National Building Code.

He urged all developers and owners of buildings in the state to obtain development permits from LASBCA before commencing any construction or renovation work. He also advised them to engage qualified professionals and contractors for their building projects.

He warned that any building found to be defective, illegal or non-conforming would be removed by LASBCA without any compromise. He appealed to all Lagosians to cooperate with LASBCA and report any distressed or defective building in their vicinity to the agency for prompt action.

Meanwhile, some traders in the Alaba International Market have complained about the short notice of three hours given to them to leave some of the buildings.

Newsflash Nigeria saw a video online where some traders in the market claimed that they were given only three hours to vacate the building, and accused the governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, of punishing them for not voting for him.
