How Some Governors Rushed to Commission Unfinished Projects Before Leaving Office

As their tenures come to an end on Monday, some governors in Nigeria have been busy inaugurating projects that are not fully completed, according to Daily Trust on Sunday.

Some of these projects include roads, bridges, housing estates, water plants and power stations that were started years ago but have not been finished.

Here are some examples of the unfinished projects that have been commissioned by the outgoing governors in different states:

In Taraba State, Governor Darius Ishaku inaugurated a bridge on the Pantisawa rural road, which is still under construction.

He also inaugurated a housing estate named after himself, which has only 250 out of 500 units completed.

The estate is supposed to have facilities like a school, a market, a clinic and a recreation centre, but none of them are ready yet.

In Kano State, Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje inaugurated the Ahmadu Bello Road, which was re-awarded to a foreign company after revoking the contract from an indigenous one.

However, the road is not fully completed and still needs some work. He also inaugurated the Tiga hydro power generation plant, which was initiated by the previous administration but has not achieved a net energy gain.

In Benue State, Governor Samuel Ortom inaugurated several road projects in Makurdi and other local government areas.

He also inaugurated 45 rural electrification projects and a Fountain Estate built by the state-owned investment company.

He also laid the foundation for a new mall and secured land for a civil airport, which he expects his successor to build.

In Niger State, contractors have been rushing to complete the ongoing road projects across the state. Some of these roads include Imani Clinic-Building Materials Market in Minna, Unguwan-Daji access road and Piggery-Railway Road in Minna.

Residents have expressed concern that the quality of work may be compromised by the speed.

In Cross River State, Governor Ben Ayade inaugurated a ‘Superhighway,’ which was one of his signature projects in 2015. The project was supposed to be 275 kilometers long and cut across 16 local government areas, but it is not clear how much of it has been completed.

He also inaugurated a Spaghetti Bridge flyover at Odukpani junction, which is not finished yet.

Other projects that he inaugurated include a Teachers Continuous Training Institute, a poultry and feedmill, an Obudu German Hospital and a rice mill.

Critics have questioned the motive behind commissioning unfinished projects and whether they will benefit the people or not. They have also accused the governors of wasting public funds and playing on the intelligence of the people.
