How Obanikoro Delivered N1.2bn to Fayose for Campaign – EFCC Witness
A Federal High Court in Lagos heard on Friday how a former Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro, delivered N1.2 billion in cash to former Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose, for his 2014 governorship campaign.
The testimony came from Abubakar Madaki, a former operative of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), who is the 13th prosecution witness in the trial of Fayose and his company, Spotless Investment Limited, for allegedly laundering N6.9 billion.
Madaki told Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke that Fayose used part of the money to buy property worth N270 million in Abuja and also put N100 million in a fixed deposit account.
He said the money was part of the funds under the control of a former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.), who released it from an account in the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
He said Fayose’s claim that the money was from his political party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was false.
He said: “We contacted the PDP secretariat in Abuja. They denied receiving any money from Dasuki or the SGF’s office. They also said they did not give any campaign money to Obanikoro to give to Fayose.”
He said Fayose and his aide, Biodun Agbele, who is also facing money laundering charges in another court, could not explain the source of the huge cash deposits into Spotless Investment Limited’s bank account.
He said between June 17 and 24, 2014, Agbele deposited N150 million into the account, while another N168 million was deposited on August 24, 2016.
He said Obanikoro had earlier testified how he flew N1.2 billion and $5 million to Fayose in an aircraft.
The EFCC had re-arraigned Fayose and Spotless Investment Limited on an 11-count charge of money laundering and stealing to the tune of N6.9 billion on October 22, 2018.
They pleaded not guilty to all the charges.
The trial was adjourned till November 24 for continuation.
