How Mohbad Scammed Me Of N2m And Died After I Confronted Him, Sam Larry Reveals
Samson Balogun Eletu, also known as Sam Larry, a Lagos-based show promoter, has finally spoken out about the controversy surrounding the death of Mohbad, a rising Afrobeat star.
The Lagos State Police Command had arrested Sam Larry on Thursday in connection with the death of Mohbad, whose real name was Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba.
The 27-year-old singer was reported to have died on September 25, 2023, after he was allegedly assaulted by Sam Larry and his thugs over a debt of N2 million.
The police spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed that Sam Larry was being interrogated to unravel the circumstances that led to Mohbad’s death.
However, in a statement released on Friday, Sam Larry denied any involvement in the singer’s death, saying he had left the country since August 20, 2023, to scout for new talents in Kenya.
He also narrated how he gave Mohbad N2 million two years ago to perform at his mother’s annual remembrance concert in Ikorodu, but the singer failed to show up and refused to refund the money.
He said he had several confrontations with Mohbad over the debt, but the singer claimed he was broke and had no intention of paying back.
He said he later heard that Mohbad was shooting a music video near his house, so he went there to demand his money again, but they had a brief argument and parted ways.
He said he had not received any payment from Mohbad till date and had moved on from the issue.
He also said he did not know anything about Mohbad’s health condition, his residence, or his hospital admission before his death.
He insisted that he did not flee the country and had nothing to do with Mohbad’s death.
He said he voluntarily returned to Nigeria to clear his name and cooperate with the police investigation.
He said he was saddened by the loss of Mohbad and prayed for his soul to rest in peace.
“Two years ago, I gave N2 million to lleri to perform at my mother’s annual remembrance concert in lkorodu.”
“The boy never turned up, so I called him to ask why. He then said he was not feeling well, and when I asked for a refund, he said he lost his phone and money recently when the NDLEA raided his place.”
“Since he was leaving Marlian Records, he claimed he was now broke and had no commitment to repay.”
“I left it at that. Later, I heard that this same boy was having a music video shoot next door, practically on the next street to my house. So, I went there to ask for my money again.”
“We had an argument that lasted 5 minutes. Even one of his friends insisted he was going to pay the money. Up until today, not one kobo has been repaid, and this incident happened early last year. I have since moved on.”
Clarifying his whereabouts at the time Mohbad died, Sam Larry stated that he left the country in August to Kenya to seek for talent act for an upcoming show he was organising.
“I travelled to Kenya to find a new African act that can perform at my mother’s concert this year. I’ve been away since August 20th till now, I don’t know anything other than what was written in the blogs and press.
“I don’t even know where he lives. I don’t know any nurse or doctor or hospital, I don’t know anything about his movement, I don’t have that time,” he said.
He maintained that he did not flee the country and had nothing to do with the singer’s death, as he knew nothing going on with the singer before his sudden demise.
”I have lost a lot of more than that before, you win some, you lose some. This is my story case close. I came here willingly and happily. I knew nothing about how the musician died” .
