How a Yahoo Boy Got Busted and Jailed for Two Years Over Duping a Foreigner of $22,000
Hakeem Olanrewaju, a Lagos-based cybercriminal, popularly known as Yahoo Boy, who used his computer skills to defraud a foreigner of thousands of dollars, has been sent to prison for two years.
He was convicted and sentenced by the Federal High Court in Lagos for identity theft and impersonation, after he pleaded guilty to the charge filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
According to the EFCC’s spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren, Olanrewaju admitted to the crime, which violated the Cybercrimes (Prohibition and Prevention) Act, 2015, during his arraignment. The prosecution presented evidence and a witness to prove his guilt.
Justice Nicholas Oweibo delivered the judgement on August 15, 2023, and gave Olanrewaju an option of paying a fine of N200,000.
He also ordered that the $22,000 and the N500,000 cheque seized from Olanrewaju be returned to the victim.
The devices and gadgets used by Olanrewaju for his fraudulent activities were forfeited to the Federal Government of Nigeria.
