House of Reps Give Tinubu New Conditions On Subsidy Removal

The House of Representatives has called on the new administration to provide palliatives to cushion the effects of the petroleum subsidy removal on Nigerians.

The House made the call in a report submitted by a committee set up last year to investigate subsidy.

The report was considered and adopted on Thursday by the Committee of the Whole.

One of the recommendations approved by the House is the provision and procurement of CNG buses, which use gas instead of petroleum.

“The Federal Government should immediately design measures and palliatives to cushion the effects of the subsidy removal for Nigerians effective from this year 2023 through the provision and procurement of CNG buses as an alternative transport system with cheaper fuel consumption.

“The government should also introduce an intermodal, regional and national transport system to ease the mass movement of people across the country.”

It would be recalled that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu announced the end of subsidies on Monday, leading to an increase in the pump price of PMS across the country.

Transportation operators have also increased their fares due to the latest development.

CNG buses have been introduced for urban public transport in some countries, due to good performance in terms of pollutant emissions and lower fuel cost. CNG use in internal combustion engines is also interesting due to its high octane number and low carbon content, which reduces CO2  emissions.
