Heavy gunshots in Anambra Assembly as police teargas lawmaker

Heavy violence has rocked the Anambra state house of assembly on Thursday afternoon.
This development is coming a day after the speaker of the house, Rita Maduagwu was impeached by her fellow lawmakers. Maduagwu claims that she is still the speaker adding that “They need two-thirds of our members to impeach the Speaker or the governor, and that since they did not achieve that, “So, I’m still the Speaker.”

Shortly after her removal, a member of the House, Ikem Uzoezie of Agutali Constituency was nominated as the new Speaker.

But Maduagwu later addressed the Press and said she remained the Speaker of the House, describing those who impeached her as “rascals.”

No fewer than 300 policemen manned the Assembly area from the Alex Ekwueme Square entrance of the complex as from 8 am. Workers in the assembly complex were denied entrance and trouble began after a lawmaker mobilized some protesters to show solidarity for Maduagwu.

Police, however, handled the protesters with tear gas. A lawmaker, Mrs Beverly Nkemdiche almost collapsed after she was affected by the Teargas.
