Gunmen kidnap bride in Ilorin, demand N50m ransom
A newlywed woman, Rukkayat Musa, was kidnapped by gunmen who invaded her home at Oniyangi area on Emir’s Road, Ilorin, in the Ilorin West Local Government Area of Kwara State on Wednesday.
According to sources, the woman and her husband, identified simply as Mr Musa, got married about three months ago. The husband managed to escape through the backyard of the building when the gunmen attacked, but his wife was taken away by the assailants.
The kidnappers later contacted the family and demanded a ransom of N50m for the release of the woman. A relative of the victim, who pleaded anonymity, said the family had no such money and appealed to well-meaning Nigerians to assist them.
He said: “The kidnappers have got in contact with the family and demanded N50m, which they said should be paid before the weekend.
“The family has no such money and that is why we are appealing to philanthropists and members of the public to assist us so that the kidnappers will not kill our daughter.”
The relative said the incident was reported to the police at the Oja Oba Station, Ilorin, on Thursday.
When contacted on Friday, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Okasanmi Ajayi, confirmed the incident. He said the police were on top of the situation and would ensure that the victim was rescued unhurt.
He said: “We are aware of the incident and we are working hard to rescue the victim. We have deployed our men to comb the area and track down the kidnappers.
“We urge members of the public to provide us with useful information that can help us in our investigation.”
He also advised residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious movement or activity to the nearest police station.
