Unknown gunmen have attacked the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Professor Chukwuma Soludo, at an event in Anambra State.
Soludo, who is also an aspirant in the November 6 governorship election in Anambra, was attacked on Wednesday evening in Aguata LGA.
It was gathered that he was meeting with youths at Isuofia community when the gunmen stormed the area and opened fire.
His condition was not immediately clear but two police officers with him reportedly lost their lives.
Tochukwu Ikenga, the State Police Command, confirmed the incident.
Although he could not provide any detail regarding the casualties.
He said: “There was a gathering there (in Isuofia) where he (Soludo) attended.
“They were attacked there but that is all I know for now. I am still gathering the details.”
There has been tension in Anambra in recent months as the election draws nearer.
The tension has also resulted in an increase in security incidents, especially in remote areas.
Less than two weeks ago, three policemen and four naval officers were said to have killed during separate attacks by gunmen.
Willie Obiano, the state governor, recently raised an alarm over the worsening security situation, saying the state was under siege by criminals.
“I call on everybody, irrespective of affiliations to come together and support government and security agencies to fight our common enemy. Those who seek to destroy what we have laboured to build must not be tolerated in any manner,” Obiano had said.
