The political crisis in Rivers State has escalated as the House of Assembly has initiated the impeachment process against Governor Siminalayi Fubara over undisclosed charges. The governor, who is facing a possible removal from office, has convened an emergency meeting with some lawmakers, including the suspended House Leader, Edison Ehie.
The impeachment move was made on Monday by 24 out of 32 assembly members, who signed the impeachment notice and instructed the clerk to deliver it to the governor. The lawmakers, who are loyal to the former governor and current minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, had earlier sacked Ehie for allegedly obstructing their plan.
The lawmakers held a secret session on Monday morning between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m., without allowing any media coverage. They accused the governor of misconduct and abuse of power, but did not reveal the specific offences.
The governor, however, denied any wrongdoing and challenged the lawmakers to prove their allegations. He addressed his supporters at the assembly complex and promised to speak to the press at the right time. He said he had not committed any offence that would warrant his impeachment.
The crisis in the state was preceded by a partial burning of the assembly complex on Sunday night, which is still under investigation. It is unclear if the incident is related to the rumoured political rift between Fubara and Wike.
