The Rivers State House of Assembly has initiated the impeachment process against the state governor, Siminialayi Fubara, over alleged misconduct and abuse of power.
The lawmakers served an impeachment notice on Fubara on Monday morning, after sacking the House Leader, Edison Ehie, who is loyal to the governor.
The impeachment notice was signed by 24 out of 32 members of the assembly, indicating a majority support for the move. The lawmakers held an emergency sitting between 7 am and 9 am on Monday, in a bid to fast-track the process.
However, Fubara has dismissed the impeachment threat as baseless and unfounded. He said he had not committed any offence that would justify his removal from office.
He addressed his supporters at the Assembly Complex in Port Harcourt, where he assured them of his commitment to deliver good governance to the people of Rivers State.
He challenged the lawmakers to prove their allegations against him and tell Rivers people what he had done wrong. He said he would address the press at the appropriate time and expose the motives behind the impeachment plot.
“Let them come out and tell Rivers people the offence I have committed to warrant any impeachment.
“Let me assure the people of Rivers that I will continue to ensure that you get the dividends of democracy. At the appropriate time I will address the press”.
Meanwhile, there are reports of a violent clash at the assembly complex, as security agents fired tear gas to disperse the protesters who gathered to support or oppose the governor. Some lawmakers were seen running for safety, as the situation became tense and chaotic.
