Fuel Subsidy: President Tinubu Meets Oil Marketers, Gets Governors’ Backing Over Fuel Hike

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (BAT) has held a meeting with oil marketers in Abuja to discuss the implications of the removal of subsidy on petrol.

Tinubu had announced the subsidy removal during his inauguration on May 29, saying it was necessary to free up funds for development and reduce corruption.

Since then, the price of petrol has skyrocketed by up to 200 per cent in some parts of the country, causing hardship for many Nigerians who depend on it for transportation and other needs.

Tinubu has assured the oil marketers of his commitment to address their concerns and ensure a smooth transition to a deregulated market.

He also directed the National Economic Council (NEC) led by Vice President Kashim Shettima to work on interventions to mitigate the impact of subsidy removal on Nigerians.

The oil marketers, led by Ogun State governor Dapo Abiodun, who is a former chairman of the oil marketers association, expressed solidarity with Tinubu’s decision and pledged to support his administration.

They also announced their intention to donate 50 to 100 mass transit buses that would run on compressed natural gas (CNG), costing N100 million each and N10 billion cumulatively, to cushion the effect of the subsidy removal within the next 30 days.

Meanwhile, Tinubu has also received strong support from state governors who visited him at the State House in Abuja. The governors, who spoke through the chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF), AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State, congratulated Tinubu for tackling the fuel subsidy behemoth and promised to work with him to ameliorate the short-term impact of the decision.

They also commended Tinubu for his all-inclusive leadership and statesmanship, saying he has shown that he is a leader for all Nigerians regardless of their ethnic or religious affiliations.

Tinubu thanked the governors for their support and urged them to collaborate with the federal government in tackling the menace of poverty in the country. He said poverty was not hereditary but a product of society and that it could be eliminated with determination and collective action.

He advised the political leaders to set aside partisan politics and focus on alleviating the sufferings and pains of the people. He said Nigeria was one big family occupying one house and sleeping in different rooms. He said if they saw it that way and pushed forward, they would get their people out of poverty.
