Fulani herdsmen flee as NSCDC arrest cows in Ekiti

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Ekiti State has arrested nine cows belonging to some Fulani herdsmen following an alleged destruction of farmlands in Ikere Ekiti.

It was gathered that the cows were caught while destroying farmlands at Datunchi Farms in Ikere Ekiti, headquarters of Ikere Local government area of the State.

The herders, who were suspected, took to their heels upon sighting the operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.

The corps in the process averted what would have led into farmers /herders clashes in the community.

Newsflash Nigeria gathered that the Fulani herdsmen visit their farms with AK47 guns and they are always ready to shoot any farmers that refused to allow them graze in their farms.

In a statement in Ado Ekiti, the NSCDC Public Relations Officer Tolu Afolabi affirmed that the cows were arrested after their herders’ evaded arrest and flee during a swift response from the Agro Ranger Unit of the Command.

He said “The State Command received an emergency call from one the farmers around Datunchi Farms in Ikere while the Manager of Datunchi Farm also called for assistance as he explained that some herders have been destroying their farm feeding their animals with harvested crops and wasted other farm produce in the farms for over one month.

“The State Commandant Mr. Solomon Iyamu ordered the deployment of Agro Rangers into the farm to mediate, resolve and arrest if need be of the herders and their animals. Consequently, nine cows were arrested and they are in custody of the Command.

“Meanwhile, farmers in the area have started visiting the State Command to narrate their stories and their loses as they explained that the herders always visit their farms with guns and they are always ready to shoot any farmers that refused to allow them graze in their farms.

“They also went further to say that the last time they visited the farm, there was gun duel between the herders and local farmers in the area. They affirmed that AK49 were freely used by the herders which made the local farmers to retreat from the duel.

The NSCDC State Commandant therefore appeal to herders in the State to desist from grazing in peoples farm as they can graze their animals without destroying, killing and maiming farmers with a call to our farmers in the state that they should not take laws into their hands especially when herders are in their farms instead, they should put a distress call to the Command for assistance.
