Abdurasheed Bawa, the former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has regained his freedom after spending more than four months in the custody of the Department of State Service (DSS).
He was arrested on June 14, 2023, shortly after President Bola Tinubu suspended him from his position as the head of the anti-graft agency over allegations of corruption and misconduct.
The DSS did not disclose the reason for his arrest or file any formal charges against him, raising concerns about his human rights and due process.
He was finally released on Wednesday night, October 25, 2023, following intense pressure from civil society groups and international organizations.
His release is seen as a victory for the rule of law and a sign of hope for other political detainees in Nigeria.
