Atiku Slams US Secretary of State for Calling Bola Tinubu

Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has expressed his disbelief over the phone call made by Anthony Blinken, the US secretary of state, to President-elect Bola Tinubu.

Blinken had called Tinubu on Tuesday, to congratulate him on his victory in the 2023 presidential election and to pledge his country’s commitment to partner with the incoming administration.

Blinken said the US-Nigeria partnership is built on shared interests and strong people-to-people ties and that those links should continue to strengthen under Tinubu’s tenure.

But in a tweet on Wednesday, Abubakar said Blinken’s call to Tinubu contradicted the US position on the general election.

He said that the US, as the bastion of democracy, should not give legitimacy to a widely acknowledged fraudulent election in Nigeria.

“I am in disbelief that Anthony Blinken, US secretary, called Tinubu, a contradiction to the publicly stated position of the US on Nigeria’s 2023 presidential election,” Abubakar wrote.

“This is inconceivable considering that America, as the bastion of democracy, is well briefed on the sham election of February 25.

“To give legitimacy to the widely acknowledged fraudulent election in Nigeria can be demoralising to citizens who have hedged their bet on democracy and the sanctity of the ballot.”

Atiku further claimed that he was the rightful winner of the election and that he was challenging the outcome in court.

He accused Tinubu of rigging the election with the help of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and some security agencies.

He also alleged that INEC had refused to release the necessary documents that he requested to present as evidence in his election petition.

He said that INEC officials demanded an N1.5 million fee to process the documents concerning the elections in Rivers and Sokoto states.

He said that this was inconceivable considering that he had paid N100 million as a filing fee for his petition.

He urged Blinken to reconsider his stance and support his quest for justice and democracy in Nigeria.
