FG to Build One Million Affordable Homes for Poor Nigerians

The Federal Government has launched a new programme called Renewed Hope Shelter, which aims to provide one million low-cost housing units for the poor, internally displaced persons (IDPs) and refugees in Nigeria within seven years.

The National Programme Manager, Mrs Chidimma Makuachukwu, announced this on Tuesday at the Sixth Nigeria Affordable Housing Finance and Innovation Summit (NAHFIS Expo 2023) in Abuja. She said the programme will be implemented in collaboration with state and local governments, who will provide the lands for the houses.

She explained that the programme will use local labour and materials to empower the local communities and create jobs. She also said that the programme will target the most vulnerable states across the federation, and that there will be no selection process for the beneficiaries.

She said that the programme has already started in Benue State, where the IDPs are being resettled to their ancestral homes with the support of the state and local authorities. She added that the programme will be extended to all the states in Nigeria by 2024.

The Renewed Hope Shelter programme is part of the Federal Government’s efforts to address the housing deficit and improve the living conditions of the vulnerable population in Nigeria. The programme is also expected to contribute to the social and economic development of the country.
