#EndSARS: Olubadan, Afe Babalola, Fayose tell Buhari to address protesting youths
The Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Saliu Adetunji, urged the President Muhammadu Buhari, to address Nigerians immediately in a bid to douse the tension as the protest reached fever pitch.
The monarch made the call on Wednesday in a statement in Ibadan, noting that no other person than the President should address the citizen at this crucial moment as attempts by other personalities would amount to “scratching the matter on the surface.”
Also, the legal luminary and founder, Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti, Aare Afe Babalola (SAN) again on Wednesday called on the President Buhari, to address the youths protesting for end to police brutality, saying all the steps being taken at present were not the solution.
Babalola said, “The President is the head of the nation, the youths are parts of the body (nation). I urge the President as the head to address the youths and offer remedial steps to be taken to alleviate the pains.”
The elder statesman made the plea in a statement in Ado Ekiti titled, ‘Call on President Buhari to address pains of the nation’.
The ABUAD founder said, “The deployment of soldiers to the streets is not the answer. The imposition of curfew is certainly not the answer. The use of live bullets and other lethal weapons against protesting youths is not the answer. The killing of protesting youths is also not the answer.
“A protest both in fact and in law is analogous to a message which an injured toe sends to the brain complaining about unbearable pain. The response by the brain and the head is normally to take steps to treat the pain to the toe. Any injured person who refuses to take steps to treat pains to any part of the body does so at his own peril,” Babalola stated.
Also, a former governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, on Wednesday bemoaned Buhari’s failure to address the protesting youths, saying the development was sad.
Fayose also expressed sadness that soldiers were allegedly sent to attack protesting youths.
The ex-governor, who spoke in a tweet and an untitled statement, which he signed and was made available by his media aide, Lere Olayinka, said, “This is simply a function of bad leadership in our country; shame on them and their commanders.”
Fayose stated, “Life does not matter to a clueless leader whose only fulfilment is that he is called Mr President. He cares about no one except himself. Regrettably, that’s why up till now, the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has not said a word. Sad!
“However, the sad reality we must face now is that the current situation in our nation is a result of allowing a clearly incompetent man to ascend to the highest office in the land. I saw all these coming and I warned Nigerians.”
