Ekiti Launches First Independent Power Project to Boost Electricity Supply
Ekiti State has made history by inaugurating its first Independent Power Project (IPP), a 3.6MW power plant that will provide reliable and affordable electricity to the state government and its facilities.
The IPP, which was completed by Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s administration in partnership with Fenchurch Power Ltd, is a landmark achievement in the state’s quest to overcome the challenges of inadequate and erratic power supply from the national grid.
The IPP project was initiated by the former governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, two years ago, as a response to the dismal situation of electricity in Ekiti, where the state received an average of 13 MW daily from the national grid, leaving some communities in darkness for up to 12 years.
The project was designed to address the growing demand for electricity in Ado-Ekiti and other emerging urban centers, as well as to support the state’s industrialization and socio-economic development.
The current administration has also implemented other effective measures to improve the electricity situation in the state, such as rehabilitating and reconnecting the Gbonyin/Aiyekire and Ekiti East 33KV lines to the national grid, redirecting energy from the 30MVA transformer at the TCN facility at Omisanjana to the Industrial and Tourism zone of Erijiyan and Ikogosi, extending electricity to the Agric-Processing Zone of Iyemero from Eruku in Kwara State, and switching from conventional streetlight lamps to solar lamps in the state capital.
Furthermore, the state has enacted the Electricity Power Sector Law 2023, which grants the state authority over electricity generation, transmission, and distribution within its territory, in line with the Electricity Act of 2023. This legislation also allows independent meter supply to willing customers, creating opportunities for meter vendors and ensuring fair billing for consumers.
With the success of the IPP project, Ekiti State is inviting more investors in the power sector to partner with the state in providing more electricity options for the people.
The state is also committed to creating an attractive destination for work, living, and investment, by leveraging its abundant human and natural resources, and its visionary leadership.
