Ekiti Assembly approves three-year tenure for LG chairmen and Councillors
The Ekiti State House of Assembly has approved the extension of the tenure of elected Local Government Chairmen and Councillors from two years to three.
The approval was based on the report of the House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, chaired by Hon. Reuben Awoyemi, which was presented at a plenary session in Ado Ekiti.
The report stated that the extension would take effect after the December election into the Councils.
In another development, the Ekiti State House of Assembly has passed two bills to establish a Road Fund Board and a Rural Access Roads Authority in the state, with the aim of ensuring proper maintenance and rehabilitation of bad roads.
The bills, titled Ekiti State Rural Access Roads Authority bill, 2023 and Ekiti State Roads Funds bill, 2023, were passed at plenary on Tuesday.
The lawmakers unanimously supported the passage of the two bills, citing the expected benefits that their implementation would bring to the people.
Some of the members who spoke in favour of the bills included Honourables Yemi Osatuyi; Stephen Aribasoye; Akin Oso; Goke Olajide; Femi Akindele and the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Hakeem Jamiu. They agreed that the bills would have a positive impact on the living standard of Ekiti people, especially farmers who would have access to good roads to transport their produce.
They also noted that the two bills would complement each other in promoting and sustaining development in the maintenance of all classes of state roads in Ekiti.
The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Olubunmi Adelugba commended her colleagues for their thorough consideration of the bills and expressed confidence that their implementation would enhance the social and economic well-being of Ekiti people.
The two bills were read for the third time by the Clerk of the House, Mr Tola Esan, and passed unanimously by the House.
