A popular singer, Aniji Shedrack Chidubem, who goes by the stage name Sanij-D, has been arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for allegedly scamming two foreign women of over £11,000.
The EFCC said that Sanij-D, who is based in Lagos, was part of a syndicate of internet fraudsters who used fake identities and stories to swindle unsuspecting victims.
Sanij-D, who is known for his songs like “Profesy” and “Katalina,” was apprehended in the Kuje Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, on Monday, following credible intelligence on his fraudulent activities.
According to the EFCC, Sanij-D posed as a marine engineer named Christopher Rossi, who claimed to be working on boats and pipelines in Singapore.
He used social media platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram, with foreign phone numbers, to communicate with his victims and solicit money from them.
The EFCC said that Sanij-D defrauded a Briton, Susan Mclean, of the sum of £9,300 and an American, Diana Rosado Gonzalax, of $2,000. He allegedly told them that he needed money for various reasons, such as paying for his flight ticket, clearing his goods at the port, or settling his hospital bills.
The EFCC said that Sanij-D confessed to his crimes and also revealed the names of his accomplices.
The anti-graft agency said that Sanij-D will be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded.
The EFCC also warned the public to be wary of online fraudsters who use different tricks and schemes to dupe unsuspecting people.
