Edo Poll: INEC provides update, deploys 8 commissioners

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Thursday said all is set for the Edo State governorship election.
Festus Okoye, National Commissioner for Information spoke at the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Forum on Thursday in Abuja.
He noted that sensitive materials like the result sheets and ballot papers arrived in the state on Monday.
Okoye disclosed that a meeting with political parties on the modus operandi of inspection was held on Wednesday.
“The materials left the Central Bank of Nigeria today for the various local governments. We have 192 registration areas in Edo State or what you normally call wards.
“These materials are batched in accordance with the wards and the ballot papers and their results sheets are colour coded to the various local governments.’’
He assured that the commission had put in place mechanism to address the challenge of transportation.
“What we have done is to move some of our Hilux vehicles from the contiguous states that do not have elections, so that we can use them as an intervention mechanism during the election.
“Secondly, there are a few of the local governments that are riverine. We are in contact with the Marine Police and the Navy to provide gunship to protect our staff members going to work in some of these areas.”
The official added that the commission had concluded training of all electoral officers.
Training of returning officers for wards, local governments and state will end on Friday.
Okoye hinted that all collation officers were picked from tertiary institutions outside Edo.
He confirmed that INEC posted five Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) to support Edo REC.
Additionally, three national commissioners have been deployed to support the process.
