Economic Hardship: Police Arrest Man in Abuja for Attempted Suicide

The Police Command in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has confirmed the arrest of Shuaibu Alhaji Yushau for attempting to take his own life.

In a statement released on Monday, the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, detailed that the arrest followed a distress call from concerned citizens. They reported a young man who had climbed a very high mast belonging to ASO Radio in Katampe on Monday morning.

Upon receiving the information, operatives of the command swiftly mobilized to the location to prevent the man from harming himself. “With much professional persuasion from the police operatives, the man, later identified as Shuaibu Alhaji Yushau, was prevented from taking his own life,” SP Adeh stated.

During interrogation, Yushau revealed that his decision was driven by the worsening economic situation in the country, lamenting that “people are dying everywhere.” He further disclosed that he had been observing the mast for about a week before deciding to climb it.

The incident underscores the growing desperation and distress among citizens in the face of economic challenges. The prompt response by the police operatives not only saved a life but also highlighted the importance of mental health awareness and the need for accessible support systems in times of crisis.
