Driver Duped into Giving Kidney to Boss’s Brother for Empty Promises

A driver, Chimobi Nwoko, has accused his boss, Akazue, of tricking him into donating one of his kidneys to his younger brother, Osinachi, and reneging on his promise of rewarding him for the donation.

Nwoko said he was hired as a driver by Akazue in November 2018. He said he often drove Osinachi to the hospital for dialysis as he had a kidney problem. One day, Akazue told him that his brother’s kidney had failed and he might die soon.

He asked Nwoko if he would be willing to donate one of his kidneys to save his brother’s life. He offered him $20m, a house and a driving job in the US as compensation.

Nwoko agreed to the deal and went to a popular hospital in Lagos State with Akazue and his relatives on December 22, 2018. He said Akazue warned him not to tell his family about the transplant. He also said Akazue brought his sister, Deborah, to pose as his wife and sign the consent form at the hospital.

The transplant was successful and Nwoko was discharged from the hospital. However, instead of fulfilling his promises, Akazue moved him to a one-room apartment in Mowe and ordered him to resume work one week after the surgery. Nwoko said he was still in pain and had no drugs or medical care. He also said he noticed that he was always tired and not as energetic as before.

Nwoko said he confronted Akazue several times about his promises, but he always brushed him off. He said he realised he had been duped and informed his parents on October 13, 2023. His family reported the matter to the Zone 2 Command, where the Assistant-Inspector General, Muhammed Ali, ordered the arrest of Akazue on Sunday, October 22.

Nwoko’s lawyer, Abdullai Dania, described the case as organ theft and demanded N500m as compensation for his client. He said if Akazue refused to pay, they would sue him and pursue the criminal charges against him. He also said they did not know the whereabouts of Osinachi, who received Nwoko’s kidney. He said Akazue told the police to look for him themselves.

The Public Relations Officer of the Zone 2 Command, Hauwa Idris-Adamu, confirmed the arrest of Akazue but declined to give further details. She said she would get back to our correspondent later. However, she had not done so as of the time of filing this report.

Calls made to Osinachi’s phone numbers were not answered as they were switched off.
