Doctors Declare Indefinite Strike Over Kidnapped Colleague In Cross River
The medical doctors in Cross River State have declared an indefinite strike action to protest the abduction of one of their own, Dr. Ekanem Ephraim.
Ephraim, who works at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH), was kidnapped on Thursday night by gunmen who posed as patients at her residence in Calabar.
The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) Cross River branch announced the strike decision on Sunday in a communique issued after an Emergency General Meeting (EGM) in Calabar.
The communique, signed by the NMA Chairman, Dr. Felix Archibong, stated that the doctors would withdraw their services until Ephraim is released unconditionally by her captors.
The communique also urged the State government to activate all necessary measures to secure the safe and timely release of their colleague.
The doctors expressed their displeasure over the spate of kidnappings and insecurity in the State, which they said had affected their members and other residents.
They called on the government and security agencies to ensure the protection of lives and property in the State.
