December 9 Convention: PDP Broke, Begs Governors, Aspirants For Money, Okays 13 Panels
Less than three years after losing the 2015 presidential election, the Peoples Democratic Party is broke, a memo signed by the party’s National Caretaker Committee, Mr. Ahmed Makarfi, has revealed.
It was also gathered that the party was still in a dilemma on how to source for funds for its December 9 national convention in Abuja.
These were issues deliberated upon at the meeting of the National Executive Committee of the party held in Abuja on
Thursday.
The memo revealed that the party was broke to the extent that it could not pay its workers three years of accumulated allowances put at N554, 220,000.
The memo soliciting assistance from the party’s “stakeholders” was sent to the NEC meeting of the party.
Makarfi, in the memo, also informed NEC that efforts made by the party to get bank funding for the money failed.
The letter, dated November 30, addressed to the party’s National Executive Committee, partly read, “NEC may recall that I presented a memo on the above subject matter to the 76‘“ NEC held on October 24, 2017.
“In the said memo, the pitiable condition of the staff welfare was highlighted and NEC was prayed to come up with fundraising strategy to pay off outstanding three years staff housing allowances amounting to N554,220,000.00
“NEC, however, asked the National Caretaker Committee to liaise with some party stakeholders to raise the required fund.
“The NCC, however, decided to reach out to Skye Bank Plc over the disputed N500million with a view to using it to settle part of the allowances. However, this is not working out a planned.
“Consequently, the NCC is left with no option but to revert to NEC with an appeal to members of NEC to please assist in raising at least one-year housing allowance (2016) amounting to N150,000,000’ for the PDP and the Peoples Democratic Institute’s workers based on 65 per cent salary structure.”
Some members of NEC said that when the matter was deliberated, it was generally agreed that the party was not in a position to raise the money.
According to them, the party was also said to be in a dilemma on how to raise money for its December 9 national convention.
One of the NEC members, who spoke on condition of anonymity said, “It was at this point that the party agreed that governors, members of the Board of Trustees, aspirants should come to the aid of the party.
“We also agreed that anyone who is touched should help the party to raise funds, especially for the convention.
“Another NEC member said the party might not be able to fund the convention if “well-meaning members of the party do not come to our aid.
