COVID-19: PDP extends tenure of Ekiti LGAs Excos for 3 months as dissolve State party executives

The National leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, on Friday, May 8, has extended the tenure of the Ekiti State local government Exco members of the party in the state by three months.

The LG Exco members is, however, to function as a caretaker committee pending the Local government congresse of the party where a new executive committee will be elected.

A letter addressed to the state chairman, Barr Gboyega Oguntuase and signed by the National Organising Secretary of PDP, Col. Austin Akobundu, explained that the Local government Excos of the party has now been reconstituted into a Caretaker Committee and its tenure extended by three months.

“I wish to formally inform you that the National Working Committee (NWC) of our great party, on behalf of the National Executive Committee, NEC, in under section 29 (2)(b) and 31(2) (E) of our party’s constitution (2017 as amended) approved the reconstitution of the current Local government executive committee members of your state into state caretaker committee.

“Accordingly, the current Local government Exco Members upon the expiry of their tenure acts as Local government Caretaker Committee to run the affair of the Party until a new Local government Executive Committee is elected; provided that they shall not serve in such capacity for more than three months from May 5, 2020.”

The Party has also dissolved the State Executives Working Committee of the party in the State.

This is contained in a statement signed by the National Organizing Secretary of the party, Col. Austin Akobundu rtd.

To this end, a caretaker committee has been set up by the national body of the party to run the affairs of the union pending the conduct of another election.

The seven man caretaker committee is chaired by Senator Hosea Agboola.

Other members are Otunba Yinka Akerele, Hon. Samuel Omotosho, Hon. Tunji Odeyemi, Ariyo Afolabi, Hon. Adeyemi Abiodun Sunday and Hon. Diran Odeyemi who is to serve as secretary of the committee.

The letter further stated that the reconstitution and tenure extension became necessary ”due to the COVID-19 Pandemic in the country and the Federal Government’s Stay-at-Home directives.”
