Court sentences two robbers to death by hanging in Ekiti

An Ekiti State High Court on Tuesday sentenced two persons, Adekunle Osho, 31, and Chinedu Ugwu, 34, to death by hanging for armed robbery.

Justice Adekunle Adeleye said Osho and Ugwu were actively involved in robbery and were linked with a stolen vehicle, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

 “The accused are guilty as charged and hereby sentenced to death by hanging,” he said in Ado Ekiti, the state capital.

The convicts were charged with robbing one Chief Ojo Gbenga of his Toyota Camry car and N150,000 cash on or about November 14, 2014 at Oke Ila, Tinuola area of Ado Ekiti.

Gbenga, in a police statement, said the armed robbers blocked his car with theirs while on his way home, dragged him out, shot him in the leg and took away his car and N150,000.

It stated that as of the time of the incident, Osho and Ugwu were armed with guns, an offence punishable under Section 1(2) of the Robbery and Firearm (Special Provision) Act, Cap R11, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

The victim had in his statement before the police stated, “On that fateful day, I was on my way home and on getting to a bump along the road, I saw the robbers’ car crossed my way.

“They dragged me out and I was shot in the leg before they took away my car alongside the sum of N150,000.”

The prosecutor, Gbemiga Adaramola, called three witnesses and tendered exhibit the recovered car, two native dresses and the sum of N84,700.

The defendants were represented by their counsel, Yinka Opaleke, but called no witness.
