Court Jails Man for 17 Months over Phone Theft Worth N165,000

A man who broke into a house and stole two cell phones worth N165,000 has been sentenced to 17 months in prison by a Shari’a court in Kano State.

The court, which is located in Gama PRP area of the state, delivered the verdict on Tuesday.

The convict, Abubakar Musa, a resident of Atlanta, admitted to the crime after the prosecutor, Aliyu Abidin Murtala, presented the charges against him.

He confessed that he trespassed into the house and took away the phones while the owner was asleep at night.

The prosecutor urged the court to consider the evidence and punish him accordingly.

The presiding judge, Mallam Nura Yusuf Ahmad, agreed with the prosecutor and convicted Musa of two offences: breaking into a house and theft.

He sentenced him to five months in prison for the first offence and one year for the second offence. He also ordered him to pay N165,000 as compensation to the owner of the phones or face an additional six months in prison.

The judge said the sentence was based on the provisions of Islamic law (Shari’a), which is applicable in Kano State. He said the court was established to hear and determine appeals in matters relating to Islamic personal law.

He warned Musa to desist from such criminal acts in the future and advised him to repent and seek forgiveness from God.

According to a report by Premium Times, Kano State has recently appointed 34 Shari’a court judges to enhance the administration of justice and reduce congestion in the courts. The new judges will be sworn in on Friday.
