Court Jails Fed Poly-Student For One Year For Stealing Ekiti University Student’s Mobile Phones
A 23-year-old man, Emmanuel Ekundayo, has been sentenced to one-year imprisonment by a Magistrate Court in Ikere-Ekiti for stealing mobile phones from some students of the Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science, and Technology, Ikere-Ekiti (BOUESTI).
Ekundayo, who claimed to be a student of the Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti, was charged with one count of stealing before Magistrate Dotun Omoteye.
The court heard that Ekundayo was caught on July 17, 2023, while ransacking the bags of students who were writing their first semester examinations at the Library Lecture Theatre. He confessed to stealing the phones and pleaded guilty to the charge.
The accused pleaded guilty to the offence and was convicted by Magistrate Dotun Omoteye on the strength of the evidence presented to him. He was sentenced to one year in prison, with the option of a fine of N50,000.
The Acting Director of Legal Matters at the University, Barrister Busuyi Jayeoba, commended the judgement and said it would serve as a warning to other potential criminals.
He also reiterated the University’s commitment to ensuring a safe and conducive environment for learning and research.
This case is a reminder to all students that they should be vigilant and take steps to protect their belongings, especially during examinations. They should also report any suspicious activity to the university authorities immediately.
