Bye-elections: INEC declares PDP’s Odey winner of Cross River North senatorial seat
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Dr Stephen Odey, has won the Cross River North Senatorial bye-election held on Saturday with a landslide.
Odey was declared the winner of the poll by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday.
INEC Returning Officer, Prof. Ameh Akoh of Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ikwo, Ebonyi State, who announced the result said, the PDP candidate, Dr Stephen Odey scored 129,207 votes to defeat other eight contestants.
According to him, the candidate of All Progressives Congress, APC, Mr Joe Again (SAN) scored 19,165 votes to place second while African Democratic Congress, Mr Gregory Agam came third with 388 votes among others.
“The PDP candidate having scored the highest number of votes cast is hereby declared the winner in line with electoral guidelines, ” he stated.
While PDP candidate Mrs Maria Godwin Akwaji also emerged victorious at the Obudu State Constituency bye-elections.
The Collation Officer, Prof. Abel Ezeoha of the Alex Ekwueme Federal University of Technology, Ikwo Ebonyi State announced the result after Collation from different polling units.
Ezeoha, said Akwaji won with a landslide victory of 32, 166 votes beating her closest opponent of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abor Adaje Godwin who garnered 3, 546 votes.
Maria is wife to the former occupant of the seat, Godwin, who died in June.
With this development, she now succeeds her husband to represent the people of Obudu constituency in the Cross River State House of Assembly.
Her husband, Akwaji died at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital two weeks after he was admitted.
Although his death could not be ascertained, there have been rumours that the late lawmaker had COVID-19 complications.
