Buhari Deceiving Nigerians With Commitment To June 12 — Afenifere

Pan Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, on Tuesday, said President Muhammadu Buhari is using June 12 to launder the image of controversial elections and not really showing enough commitment to the date.

Though the president was inaugurated for second term on May 29, the Federal Government said that the government’s Democracy Day activities would hold mostly on June 12.

It has also invited world leaders to attend the celebration of the president’s inauguration on June 12.

However, Afenifere said despite declaring June 12 as Democracy Day, it has not seen the demonstration of June 12 in the country’s national affairs especially in the electoral process.

While the June 12 election which was won by the late MKO Abiola was declared the freest and fairest election, the 2019 election won by President Buhari was marred with controversy and is being challenged by the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

Speaking with Daily Independent on the celebration of President Buhari’s inauguration on June 12, Yinka Odumakin, Afenifere’s National Publicity Secretary, also condemned the decision by President Buhari host leaders of the Lake Basin Commission to an informal Security Summit on June 12 in Abuja.

“The whole scenario appears as just using June 12 to launder the image of controversial elections. We have not seen the demonstration of the spirit of June 12 in our national affairs particularly our electoral process.

“That a Lake Chad conference has been fixed for the same day shows clearly the half-hearted commitment to June 12. It’s no more than seeking political gains from the major democratic landmark”, he said.
