BREAKING: Tinubu Picks Ex-Governor Shettima As Running Mate

The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu, finally settled for a Muslim – Muslim ticket by announcing Senator Kashim Shetima as his running mate in the 2023 general elections.

Tinubu made the announcement in Daura, Katsina State shortly after Ibrahim Masari resigned as the vice-presidential nominee.

Recall that Masari was in June selected as Tinubu’s running mate — but only in a placeholder capacity.

“This is to inform our esteemed party leaders under our able President Muhammadu Buhari, teeming party members and the great people of Nigeria, of the outcome of a crucial discussion I just had with the flag-bearer of our great party, All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” Masari said in a statement on Sunday.

“Recall that I had the singular honour and privilege of being nominated as the running-mate to Asiwaju Tinubu last month after a keenly contested presidential primary ahead of the 2023 general elections.

“But, after much reflection and wider consultations, I now wish to step down. I realized that my decision will enable Asiwaju to have more latitude to give more accommodation and inclusion that will position our party to win the coming elections, with the support of the people of Nigeria”.

Newsflash Nigeria gathered that Tinubu had wanted to pick the incumbent governor of Borno, Babagana Zulum as the running mate but he reportedly pleaded that his mentor, Shettima should rather be picked.

Tinubu announced Shettima on Sunday in Daura, the hometown of President Muhammadu Buhari in Katsina State.

Tinubu, a former governor of Lagos State briefed reporters about the choice at the end of a closed-door meeting that lasted about an hour with Buhari at the President’s residence.

According to the APC stalwart, Shettima was selected because the former Borno State governor is “competent, capable, reliable and able to be picked as a running mate”.

The APC presidential candidate was accompanied to Daura by Governor Aminu Masari shortly after his aircraft landed at the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua Airport in Katsina State.

Shettima was born on September 2nd, 1966. He is a former governor of Borno State and serving senator, representing Borno Central.

He holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Maiduguri in Agricultural Economics and a master’s degree in Agricultural Economics from the University of Ibadan. Shettima was a banker before he joined active politics.

He is married to Nana Shettima and they have three children: two females and a male.
