BREAKING: Protest rocks Bayelsa as INEC presents Certificate of Return to PDP candidate

Residents of Bayelsa State to be members of the All Progressives Congress in Bayelsa State have taken to the streets of Yenagoa, the state capital, to protest Thursday’s ruling by the Supreme Court in Abuja.

Recall that, the Supreme Court judgement had sacked the Bayelsa Governor-elect David Lyon and his Deputy, Biobarakuma Degi-Eremieoyo and ordered for the withdrawal of his Certificate of Return and issuance of same to Duoye who came second in November polls.

The apex court in a unanimous decision by a five-man panel of Justices led by Justice Mary Odili held that Degi-Eremieoyo presented forged certificates to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The apex court, in a unanimous judgment, declared Sen. Douye Diri of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) the winner of the Nov. 16, 2019 governorship election after it ruled that he scored the second-highest number of votes and had the required spread.

But angered by the development, the APC members barricaded major roads in Yenagoa and burnt tyres to register their displeasure at the ruling.

The party’s secretariat has since been cordoned off by security operatives as APC members in groups continue to make threats and chant ‘war’ songs.

The entire city is currently tensed as nobody knows what could follow next.

Meanwhile, The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has presented the Certificate of Return to Senator Douye Diri.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), on Friday morning, has declared the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Duoye Diri as the winner of the Bayelsa election.

The INEC Chairman who made this announcement at the INEC headquarters in Abuja said the certificate of return will be issued immediately to the winner.
