BREAKING: Ondo poly sacks 59 workers
The Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, Ondo State, on Wednesday announced the disengagement of 59 members of staff of the institution.
Specifically, the affected workers are workers of the Rufus Giwa Polytechnic Staff Primary and Secondary Schools.
Addressing journalists at his office, the Acting Rector of the institution, Mr. Gani Ogundahunsi, said the institution took the decision as part of the ongoing re-engineering process taking place in the polytechnic.
According to the rector, the polytechnic was running the staff primary and secondary schools at a loss. He said there was a need for restructuring while the schools would be privatised for better running.
He said, “The staff schools of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic will be privatized and investors are being invited to take advantage of the business opportunity.
“As at now, the cost of running the schools is N74million in one year whereas the total income from the school every year is N4million. This is not sustainable.
“The Governing Council has therefore decided to privatize the school”
Ogundahunsi, however, noted that 14 out of the 59 affected workers, that were originally employed directly by the polytechnic would be redeployed in the mainstream of the polytechnic, adding that efforts were being made to persuade the investors and the state ministry of education to absorb other categories of affected employees.
“No person will lose his or her employment as a result of these changes in the corporate structure,” he assured.
He also noted that the decision of the governing council did not have any involvement with the state government.
Meanwhile, the state governor has directed the Governing Board of the polytechnic to commence the immediate enumeration of workers likely to be affected by the planned privatisation of the institution’s staff school.
In a statement, issued by the state Commissioner for Information, Mr. Donald Ojogo, the governor’s directive was targeted at those who were originally workers of the institution, seconded to the staff school.
