BREAKING: NIN registration: NIMC staff down tools indefinitely

Officials of the National Identity Management Communication (NIMC) have decided to embark on a nationwide strike beginning from Thursday, January 7.

The NIMC staff who staged a protest on Thursday complained that they have been denied allowances and a suitable working condition in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Nigerian Tribune reports.

The leader of the protest in Bayelsa, Paul Soroh, lamented that as personnel work hard to ensure all Nigerians get their National Identification Number (NIN), the federal government on its part has failed to provide necessary tools for them to carry out their duties efficiently.

Soroh also disclosed that officials of NIMC are yet to receive Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) despite being listed as workers during the lockdown.

He added: “As you know workers on level 12 downwards are not supposed to be at work, but we came out to do this work voluntarily but because of the attitude of government.

We are withdrawing our voluntary services until something is done about it.”

Newsflash247 had earlier reported that with effect from Wednesday, December 30, all NIN applicants would be required to do the registration exercise through a booking system throughout the country.

The new guideline was issued on Tuesday, December 29, by the NIMC.

The NIMC’s spokesman, Kayode Adegoke, in a statement released on Tuesday disclosed that applicants would be enrolled only through a number-issuing queue system to achieve orderliness in line with new COVID-19 protocols.

The statement reads: “…the Commission wishes to announce that it has adopted a couple of measures to contain the spread of the virus whilst ensuring its services to Nigerians are not entirely interrupted.

“Effective December 30, 2020, attending to applicants would be based on Booking System.

For Bookings, applicants are to visit any of the NIMC Offices closest to them during stipulated business hours (9am – 1pm)…”.
